Forestry issues red flag warning

Due to strong winds on the western Kenai Peninsula, the Alaska Division of Forestry on Tuesday suspended permitted open burning on the Kenai Peninsula until further notice. Burning in burn barrels also has been suspended.

Winds up to 20 knots also prompted the National Weather Service to issue a small craft advisory for Kachemak Bay on Wednesday.

High to extreme fire danger conditions exist throughout southcentral Alaska and Kodiak Island. Campfires on bare earth and away from combustibles are permitted, but State Forestry advises people not to light any fires outdoors until the fire danger is reduced.

During the current fire season, all visitors and residents must check with local fire departments before lighting fires. If a fire a person ignites flares up and requires fire suppression, that person may face criminal charges and be held liable for fire suppression costs and damages.

For more information about fire dangers, visit the Alaska Division of Forestry at forestry.alaska.gov/wildland.htm.
