Shorebird success

Birds, beware!
Runners stage their own migration Sunday morning in the Migration Run, a certified 5K that began near the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon and continued on the Spit Trail to the base of the Spit.
With 1,900 estimated attendees up 10 percent from 2010 and a record number of sold out events, Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival organizers counted last weekend's event a success. Birders counted 24 separate shorebird species, such as the greater yellowlegs photographed through a spotting scope, right, at Mariner Park Lagoon.
More birders than ever participated in the junior bird program and the Big Spit Birding Challenge. The 20th annual shorebird festival is May 10-13, 2012.
