Early registration ends today

Register today for the Kachemak Bay Writers' Conference, June 10 through 14, and pay only $245; register after today and pay $295. The keynote presenter of this year's conference is U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins, and there is a faculty of 20 additional authors, editors, publishers and agents from Alaska and the United States. The program includes workshops, craft talks, "pitch-a-publisher" manuscript reviews, panel presentations, the business of writing and readings of fiction, nonfiction and poetry. A youth writers' preconference workshop for 10th- through 12th-grade students with author Jack Driscoll will be held June 10, 9 a.m.-noon.

Favorite musician returns

Greg Brown returns to Homer on Friday with a 7 p.m. performance at the Mariner Theatre. Brown will perform with guitar player Bo Ramsey and Brown's daughter, Pieta, will open the show.

Songs written by Brown have been performed by Willie Nelson, Carlos Santana, Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter. He has recorded more than a dozen albums and is a recipient of the Indie Award from the National Association of Independent Record Distributors.

Ramsey and Brown have collaborated since the late 1980s, and toured together in the United States and abroad. In addition to his own recordings, Ramsey also has paired with numerous artists and produced a six-song session for Joan Baez.

Brown, Brown and Ramsey are brought to Homer by Downward Dog Productions and Clave Folk Music. Brown also will perform in Seldovia on May 17, through coordination with the Seldovia Arts Council.

Pier One schedules auditions

Auditions are scheduled this month for two Pier One Theatre productions. At Mariner Theatre at 1 p.m. May 14 and 4 p.m. May 15, auditions will be held for William Shakespeare's "King Lear," which will be directed by Maynard Smith and performed Sept. 16-25. At Mariner Theatre at 6 p.m. May 20 and 4 p.m. May 21, auditions will be held for John Gay's "The Beggar's Opera," which will be directed by Lance Peterson and performed June 24 through July 9.

Artists selected for animal shelter

Artwork for the new Homer Animal Shelter has been awarded to Moose Run Metalsmiths of Homer, The Bear Man of Homer and Brown Bear Products of Homer. A request for sealed proposals was posted in December. Six proposals were received by the March deadline and reviewed by the selection committee.

Museum seeks volunteers

Individuals interested in becoming tour guides for the Anchorage Museum of History and Art exhibition "Light Motifs: American Impressionist Paintings from the Metropolitan Museum of Art," on view July 1 through Sept. 5, may attend docent training sessions in June. Trainings include lectures by University of Alaska Anchorage Assistant Professor of Art Education Herminia Din and The Metropolitan Museum of Art Curator Barbara Weinberg, along with video and audio segments by master teachers from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Volunteer tour guides will tour museum visitors through the exhibition daily at 12:30 p.m. starting July 1. Tour guides may sign up for specific tour days.
