As part of a repaving project of the Sterling Highway from West Hill Road to Mile 1 Homer Spit Road, contractors marked the road for pedestrian crosswalks and turn lanes, said Jason Baxley, the Alaska Department of Transportation project engineer. DOT also put up temporary warning signs at intersections reminding drivers that state law requires them to stop for pedestrians entering crosswalks. The crosswalk at Lake Street and the Sterling Highway will be striped as if a traffic signal is in place, Baxley said. Lines also have been plumbed for possible future signal equipment.
Debbie Rehder slows traffic on the Sterling Highway near Lake Street for workers marking crosswalks Monday morning.
