Police also reported a break-in several weeks ago at Homer Seaside Properties, a real estate office near lower Main Street. A camera was stolen in that break-in. Police are investigating all those crimes.
"Every now and then we'll get a spate of burglaries like this," said Homer Police Chief Mark Robl. "Unfortunately, we're having one now."
Alaska State Troopers also have responded to reports of burglaries in the Diamond Ridge and Skyline Drive area that happened last month. In some break-ins, thieves stole food. Troopers have been working with Homer Police in their investigation, and suspect some break-ins might be related to Homer incidents, said Sgt. Arthur Dunn, head of the Anchor Point Post, E Detachment. Troopers have identified suspects for some of those burglaries but have not made arrests.
Dunn asked for help in solving those burglaries, such as reports of suspicious activity in the area.
"Someone had to hear or see something," he said.
Homer Police have increased patrols of downtown businesses and done numerous security checks of businesses over the past weeks.
"We're working hard on anti-burglary patrols and on the few leads we do have to solve these crimes," Robl said. "That's good street police work that helps solve crimes like this," he added.
Robl gave business owners some advice.
"Number one, don't leave a single drop of cash in your business. A burglar will come in for a roll of quarters," he said. "Most of what you're dealing with is juvenile related crime. They're willing to take a risk for a small amount. Usually the amount they get is insignificant compared to the damage they cause."
Anyone with information on any of these burglaries is asked to call the Homer Police at 235-3150 or Alaska State Troopers at 235-8239. Anonymous tips can be made to CrimeStoppers at (800) 478-HALT (478-4258).
