Goldsworthy inspiring
Last Monday, students of Fireweed Academy attended the Andy Goldsworthy movie "Rivers and Tides" at the Homer Theatre. Though we were familiar with his work and books, seeing him in action was quite a treat. The movie provided us with great inspiration for environmental art in the future.

Student Natalie Betley wrote, "I think the part where the guy threw red balls of stuff into the water was interesting. If that stuff came from the water, then why didn't the water dissolve before? One of my many favorite parts of the very interesting movie was the section of the cone shaped objects. It's amazing how sturdy they were, the tide coming in, the ox looking animal rubbing against it, and the cones still stood!"

Danielle Gagnon wrote, "My favorite out of all the objects he made was the squiggle he made out of ice, and stuck it to a rock. Then the sun shined through the ice and illuminated it."

Oceana Wills wrote, "One of my favorite parts in the movie is when he built the pinecone out of ice and it was being taken by the river. I liked how Andy Goldsworthy didn't think of his art being destructed, but instead, the pieces were being returned as a gift, to nature. I also was amazed at his patience in making his art. And how he tied in his art with the natural elements, like growth, death, tides and wind.

Brennan Palmer wrote, "You may think that some of the pictures are of the great snake mound. Don't be fooled. He made it out of nature."

Frances Bursch wrote, "Andy Goldsworthy inspired me by doing his art in the woods and on the beaches. And I know that he has an extraordinary amount of talent and patience, but I think that he is not the only one who can do things like that in this world and I think that we could do art a lot like that if we tried."

Thanks to Bunnell Street Gallery and Homer Family Theatre for providing this opportunity for us.
