Workshop registration open

There are openings in the Kachemak Bay Watercolor Society’s fall workshop with Anchorage artist Don Kolstad. The class is Sept. 15-17 at the Heritage RV Park building on the Homer Spit. All skill levels are welcome. Some watercolor experience is recommended. Kolstad’s work can be seen at Picture Alaska Gallery or www.picturealaska.com. To register, send $50 to Workshops, KBWS, P.O. Grant applications accepted

Sculpting skills shared

Lynn Wolff, a metal sculptor with 30 years experience, is offering a class for beginners 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the Homer High School wood shop. The class is $125 and includes materials and a copy of Wolff’s book. Wolff’s work can be viewed at Fireweed Gallery and at www.geo-cities.com/llynnwolff. Call 299-4199 to register.

Theatre auditions scheduled

Pier One Theatre is holding auditions for “Arsenic and Old Lace,” at the Mariner Theatre 5-6:15 tonight and 5-8 p.m. on Friday. Mary Langham is directing the play that has three female and three male roles, and six smaller roles. Heavy rehearsal time in August. The play shows August 18-20, 24-27 and 31-September 2. The following are upcoming Homer Council on the Arts summer events:

Annual Bluegrass Camp for Kids: Interested in banjo, guitar, bass or square dancing? Learn how, June 12-15 at the Church of Latter Day Saints. The bluegrass concert is June 16 at Land’s End. The cost for the four day class is $200 for members and $215 nonmembers. There is a $15 sibling discount. For more information call 235-4288 or email janet@homerart.org.

Summer Youth Workshop: “Voices in Our Heads, Theatre of the Mind: Writing and Producing Radio Plays. Simple reader’s theater becomes radio drama, where the writers, actors and technicians must communicate everything with sound. July 5-15, evenings and weekends, with a final performance at the Homer Street Fair July 15. Call 235-4288

Art Camp with Renee Jahnke: Classes are 1-2 p.m., June 12-16 for grades K-2 and 1-2 p.m., July 10-14 for grades 3-6. Classes are limited to 15 students so register early. Members $50, nonmembers $65.

There is a poetry contest for Homer area residents. Hollywood’s Famous Poets Society is sponsoring a new poetry contest. Poems must be 21 lines or less. $1,000 grand prize, no entry fee. Famous Poets has awarded over $400,000 to amateur poets over the past eight years. Send entries to 1626 North Wilcox Ave. #126, Hollywood, CA 90028 or online at www.famouspoets.com. The deadline is June 14.
