Three run, throw to state

Two Mariner throwers and one runner qualified for the state track meet in Bartlett with their performances at the Region III meet in Palmer last weekend.

Josh Blanchard qualified in the discus with his throw of 134-feet, 5-inches. He finished fourth in regions.

Jared Weaver qualified in shot put with his fifth-place performance of 45-feet, 4 1/2 inches.

Senior Monte Garroutte qualified in both the 800- and 1,600-meter races. This is his first season of track. He finished third in the 1,600 and fifth in the 800 last weekend.

All told the Homer boys finished ninth overall and most athletes scored for the team.

"I was real happy (with the effort)," said Head Coach Kelly Blake. "For as few kids that we had, we had a good (showing)."

The state meet begins Saturday.

Little angler, little fish, big prize

Isaiah Hoyer, 14, of Anchorage, caught a 28.6-pound King salmon Saturday to win first prize at the 10th annual International Calcutta King Salmon Tournament in Anchor Point.

Hoyer was fishing aboard Greg Markson's "Pole Benders Charters" boat.

Don Tetzeloff was the high bidder on the boat and also received a prize.

The tournament was delayed a week due to bad weather and when anglers got into the water they were hard-pressed to find any large kings.

Stan Harrington, the emcee of the event, said a pod of orcas had scattered the fish Saturday, and that the 28.6-pounder was the smallest fish ever to win the event.

The tournament is a fund-raiser for the South Peninsula Sportsmen Association. Entry fees and bids raised $7,305 total, which was split between the association and the two winners.

Derby has new leader

Orman Marquardt of Homer grabbed the lead in the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby Saturday with a 203.6-pound flatfish that beat out the old leader by only 1.6 pounds. Marquardt caught the fish aboard the M/V Mako captained by Scott Glosser of Capt. Scott's Sportfishing.

The fish barely beat out Mark Clark's halibut, that sits in second place. Eric Paulin of Bridgeport, Ill. is third with a 170.3-pound fish he caught on the M/V Fox II.
