Student news

The Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies has four high school internships available: two naturalist and counselor positions (one male, one female) and two counselors for residential CACS camp positions (one male, one female). For information, call 235-6667.

Pratt Museum is seeking summer youth interns. Students will report to the museum education program director and work closely with the Lake Clark National Park and Preserve interpretive staff. KENAI PENINSULA BOROUGH SCHOOL DISTRICT

May 20: Last day of school.

2009-2010 school year: The state of Alaska has changed current imunization requirements. Children in K-6 will be required to provide medically verified documentation. The Public Health Center provides these immunizations free of charge by appointment. Call 235-8857. New medical forms and religious exemption forms are available at schools.

Chapman School

May 29: Bear safety presentation by Alaska Department of Fish and Game, 12:15 and 1:15 p.m. Public is invited.

Connections Program

Ongoing: Connections is enrolling new and returning students for the 2009/2010 year. Kindergarten students must be 5 years old by Sept. 1. All kindergarten and students new to the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District must bring a photocopy of their birth certificate to the appointment. Call for an appointment to enroll, 226-1880.

May 21: Homer Connections Office closed due to graduation in Soldotna.

Through May 29: Computer swap for Homer Connections students enrolleld for 2009-2010 school year.

Summer office house: The Homer Connections office will be open through May 29, Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Ongoing: Registration. Homer Flex High School helps students earn high school diplomas through standards- and performance-based instruction. Flex serves those who are behind in graduation credits or who need an alternative environment to balance school and work.

Community Schools

Mommy and Me: Bring your baby to an afternoon of basic yoga and stretching. Baby books, music and infant playtime encouraged while moms stretch, socialize and get ready for an active summer. Prenatal and postnatal yoga DVDs will be used; ideas for fitting exercise with baby will be shared. Meet other moms. Lead by Emilie Springer. Wednesdays, 5:15-6:15 p.m., through May 27; Homer High School green room, $15 payable to Homer Community Schools.

Latin Dance (the workout) with Jeannette Argones is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays in the Homer High School Green Room. Cost is $65 for six classes. Walk-ins are welcome. Call 299-1127 or 235-6090 to register.

Pilates: This method of exercise will strengthen your core muscles, stretch and strengthen the body to keep it in balance and alignment. It may be able to treat or avoid lower back and neck pain. Learn basic Pilates mat skills, breathing, posture and proper exercise technique using the neutral spine. Taught by physical therapist Teresa Olesch. It is meant for all levels and abilities and is safe for most people. Bring a yoga mat or towel. Thursdays, 5-6 p.m., through May 28, Homer High School. Fee $15 to Community Schools, plus punch card $5 per session, purchased from instructor. For information, call 399-5589.

Kachemak Bay Campus

Advanced registration required for July and August classes: Geology of Kachemak Bay Field Studies, Marine Vertebrates of KBay and Landscape Photography.

Student Art Showcase is on exhibit at Homer Council on the Arts until May 27.

Registration for the 2009 Writers' Conference: writersconference.homer.alaska.edu. Early registration fee is $375 prior to June 11, space available.

Scholarships

Homer Chamber of Commerce has extended the scholarship deadline to 5 p.m. Aug. 3. The chamber will award one $1,000 scholarship to a graduating student of the greater Homer area, planning to attend Kenai Peninsula College. A $500 scholarship will be awarded in memory of Brother Asaiah to a graduating student in the Homer area. The scholarship award is meant to help a graduating st udent that may have no other recourse for schiparships, and who is not necessarily considering post secondary education.Applications will be available at the chabmer and online, www.homeralaska.org. AFS Intercultural Programs (formerly the American Field Service) is a worldwide, nonprofit organization that has been a leader in high school student exchange for 60 years. A new scholarship program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State for U.S., is offering 550 full scholarships to U.S. high school students to study abroad and learn languages that most students do not have an opportunity to learn but are rapidly becoming critical to know. Students aged 15 to 18 who wish to apply may visit www.NSLiforyouth.org online, or call (800)-AFS-INFO (237-4636).

CIRI Foundation: The CIRI Foundation has announced it is distributing more than 330 scholarship and grant awards totaling $900,000 for the fall 2008 term.
