Longtime Alaskan and Anchor Point resident, Joanne Gray Alexander, 65, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at her home in Anchor Point.
Joanne moved to Whittier, Alaska in 1977 and eventually settled in Anchor Point. She captained two commercial fishing boats for many years and worked at the Sourdough Express Bakery, where she made an impact on the lives of everyone she was around. Joanne had many friends in the community.
Joanne’s passion was dog mushing. She bred and trained sled dogs, and owned 40 at the time of her death. She also loved nature and the beauty of Alaska.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Evelyn Gray. She is survived by her brother, Mark Gray; son, Tim Nelson; daughter, Michelle Nelson; grandchildren: Shamone, Eric, MeShauna and Deonte Powe, Shameka and Jaruby Nelson, Taylor Connor and five nieces.
A memorial service was held May 24, 2006 at the Anchor Point Senior Citizens Center.
Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
Joanne was born Aug. 17, 1940, in Portland, Ore. She graduated from Sacred Heart High school in Salem, Ore., in 1958. She attended Marylhurst College, then obtained a horticulture degree in Alaska.
