To continue with the sounds-like-your-mom-talking-talk, pay attention to all those traffic rules, like no drinking and driving, no driving without a license, no mud-bogging in the Anchor River and no driving ATVs on the road.
The troopers say there is zero tolerance for breaking the law this weekend, and for good reason. They don’t enjoy calling parents at 3 a.m. because an underage child has been picked up drinking. They don’t enjoy breaking up fights because drunk people tend to offend easily. They don’t enjoy seeing the physical harm that occurs in any of these situations.
So, chill out, really. Don’t be selfish and ruin a perfectly good weekend for others. It isn’t about drinking, it’s about remembering.
Best bet for free food: It’s all about Anchor Point if you’re looking for some sustenance that comes easy. And that means more than the fish in the Anchor River. Anchor Point holds its Memorial Day Weekend Family Fun Festival, complete with three evenings of cooking out and music and activities for children and adults. Don’t worry, the noise won’t scare off the fish. See the Memorial Day schedule in this week’s Homer News.
Best bet for a ticket, citation or hangover: Go drinking. Just in case you missed the first part of the bets, it’s zero tolerance weekend. So if you really want to support the state, or whoever gets the money from tickets, fines and citations … .
Best bet for a paddle: The fifth annual Kachemak Bay Kayak Fest promises to be all that a kayaker could dream of — or, at least a lot of fun with gear, movies, lessons, demonstrations and a whole lot of paddling thrown in. Pick up a full schedule at the Homer Chamber of Commerce or visit the Web site www.kachemakkayakfest.com.
Best bet to see a graduation: Take the opportunity today to show some of Homer’s youth that you appreciate them. Twelve years in school is no small thing, as most people know. See this week’s Homer News Calendar for a list of schools and times.
Best bet to see a baby moose: They’re starting to show up, so remember to keep your eyes open when you see mama crossing the road. Chances are good that a little one might be following behind her. Also, no loose dogs. Please.
