Track took two to state

By Lindsay Johnson
Staff Writer

A senior and a freshman represented Homer track and field at state competition at Lathrop High School last Friday, setting a strong baseline for the small program.

Senior Mitch Wyatt ran his third-best time in the 300-meter hurdles and competed in the discus. Cassidy Soistman found out after last week's paper went out that she qualified for the big meet in the triple jump.

"I was definitely grateful to bring up a couple athletes," said Mariner Head Coach Bill Steyer, who began coaching last year with hopes of growing Homer's running program.

Though Wyatt has experience wrestling at the state level and Soistman skiing, it was a first experience for both of them in track and field. Their seasons ended with prelims.

Wasilla girls and Dimond boys teams took the 4A state championships. Kenai girls and boys finished highest of 4A peninsula teams, taking 8th and 5th, respectively. Seward boys won the 3A title.
