Homer High School Athlete Sydney Sligh
Sydney Sligh, better known as the Homer Lady Mariners Varsity pitcher of the last two years, has already brought a lot of talent to the table in high school sports. She is a three sport athlete, participating in volleyball and hockey as well as softball, making her name known around the state. Coming in as a freshman last year, she proved to be the strongest pitcher for the Mariners.
"I've played softball since I was four in Arkansas, and started pitching in fifth grade," said Sligh, who has thrown a no-hitter in each of her high school softball seasons so far.
Last year, Sligh attended a camp in Ketchikan that was put on by the University of Washington Huskies. This year however, she plans on traveling to Texas, to play for a college recruitment camp. She hopes that in her last two high school years she can improve her pitch speed, accuracy and, hopefully, be scouted by coaches at the next level; however she would like to go to college and pitch in Arkansas where she grew up.
The Lady Mariners will make yet another state appearance if they can defeat the Kodiak bears this week in Kodiak. This would mark the second time in both of Sligh's high school years that the Lady Mariners have been to the state championships held in Anchorage.
Norm Anderson graduated last week from Homer High School.
"It's really scary being a starting pitcher as an underclassman because you're playing with a bunch of seniors, but I have always played better under pressure."
