Tourist tax in disguise
By increasing the tourist-season sales tax rate from 6.5 percent to 7.5 percent (a 15 percent increase) and then reducing the off-season sales tax rate from 6.5 percent to 5.5 percent (a 15 percent reduction) will have the net effect of refunding to annual residents their increased tourist-season sales tax payments.
The 30 percent sales tax differential between the off-season and the tourist season is a tourist tax in disguise.
