HOMER’S BEST BETS

School is out, June is here and everything is happening at once. How do you choose between making the registration deadline for Strut Your Mutt, or that garage sale you just passed on East End Road? How about watering your flowers or being on time for work? Or going camping at Johnson Lake instead of watching Arlo Guthrie and Beau Soleil? Rats. There is seriously too much to do this time of year.

The fishing is easy Skyler Day, 14, of Wasilla, fishes during Youth Fishing Day at the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon last Saturday.
That was a complaint.

To have everything fun and summer and not be able to take it all in, or even a quarter of it, bugs some of us.

So much for time to smell the roses. They’re lucky if they get a splash of water on the way out the door.

BEST HEAR THE AUTHORS BET: Talk about a lot of writing. Every year the Kachemak Bay Writers’ Conference gathers authors — and those who would like to be authors — into one week of reading, writing and learning. Although the conference is full, there still are opportunities to hear authors who are presenting at the conference. Jeffrey Eugenides presents at Land’s End, 8 p.m., Saturday. Various authors read at the Homer Bookstore, Captain’s Coffee Roasting Co. and Kachemak Bay Campus-East at 7:30 p.m., Sunday. Readings are free and open to the public.

BEST STRUT THAT LOVELY MUTT BET: If you have a “Rover,” or a “Duke” or a “Lady” who isn’t, Saturday is their day. Whatever their name, or breed, show off your favorite friend at the seventh annual Strut Your Mutt. Registration is 10:15 a.m. at the Homer High School parking lot. Call the Homer Animal Friends at 235-7729.

BEST HANG WITH THE HORSE PEOPLE BET: How many people haven’t dreamed of owning a horse? For the ones who finally got one, and for the ones still dreaming, there is an opportunity to make Homer a little more horse friendly. Tonight at 7 is the first member-recruiting meeting for the Kachemak Bay Equestrian Association, City Hall Cowles Council Chambers. Everyone interested in horses is welcome.

BEST LEARN ALL ABOUT IT BET: How many times have you stared at a flower and tried to figure out its name? It’s hard to appreciate something if you don’t understand it. Wow hiking buddies with your knowledge of flora and fauna after joining the new Salmonberry Society Nature Group. Sponsored by TRAILS, the group meets at various times and locations. Call 235-7911 for information.

BEST BLUEGRASS BET: A kids’ bluegrass camp begins Monday. No tents. No campfires. This is all about music. Sponsored by Homer Council on the Arts the camp lasts all week. Give kids an outlet for that artistic music bug, be it banjo, guitar, bass or square dancing. The class is Monday-Thursday, with a concert Friday at Land’s End. Call 235-4288 to register.
