The newly-formed Economic Development Team for Homer is seeking applications for those interested in creating an economic development plan for Homer, publishing the city's current baseline statistics and identifying area assets and opportunities for economic growth.
Applications are being accepted by the Homer Chamber of Commerce board of directors. Work on the multi-year project should begin in August, according to the chamber.
The team is hoping to attract people with a strong background in economic development, an interest in seeing planned development, or people with specific ideas. Applications can be obtained by calling the chamber at 235-7740 or stopping by the office on the Sterling Highway.
A report released by a citizen oversight group concludes Alaska's North Slope oil industry has been highly profitable, even at low oil prices, in recent years.
The industry made more than $800 million in 1998, when oil prices averaged $13 per barrel, and $5 billion last year with prices averaging $39 per barrel, the report states.
The report was commissioned by the Prince William Sound Regional Citizens' Advisory Council after the oil industry claimed that it needs to reduce environmental protections in the sound because of financial reasons.
