The most memorable and mentionable item is that over 80 percent of participants this year were from out of town. Alaskans from Fairbanks to Juneau came to join us, as did visitors from as far away as Oregon, Chicago and New York. Most came specifically for the Fest, a good proportion stayed for at least five days and several were already planning their next trip back. This information speaks to triumphantly meeting our missions of increasing shoulder season tourism and putting Homer on the map of key kayaking destinations.
Our success is attributed to an endless, Oscar worthy list of people who offered support in a spectrum of creative ways. At the very core is the Homer Chamber of Commerce and the body of business members who chose to participate. With the news of this year's growth, I commend those businesses for their contributions and hope that many more see the value of this endeavor in the years to come.
I'd especially like to acknowledge the Kachemak Kayak Fest Committee for putting their faith in me and for their tireless help in taming this wild and wonderful beast. Finally, special thanks are extended to all the local and outside entities who gave their time, facilities, services and merchandise to help build a rich, well-rounded community minded event.
Perhaps this is the beginning of a local tradition where the Kachemak Kayak Fest represents the kick-off of summer, with a parade of colorful car-tops that come each year to set the tone for a pleasing and prosperous season.
Now, about that hammock
