The trailer's owners, Cho Kyu Jin and Sun Shik of Soldotna have less than 30 days to remove it or the city will tear it down, said city manager Walt Wrede.
"The neighborhood has complained about it for years," Wrede said. But the city has been having a hard time getting a response from the owners.
Wrede said they wouldn't accept certified mail at their Soldotna address even though the city has sent notices "off and on for the last four years," Wrede said.
According to the notice printed in the June 5 edition of the Homer News, the trailer located at 110 Cityview Ave was inspected by the city and it was revealed that "the trailer's roof was partially collapsed and that the structure is not safe to enter," the city's report read. The trailer interior also was infested with rodent feces and an animal carcass, according to the notice.
According to the Kenai Borough Assessing Department Web site, Jin and Shik own several properties in the borough, including a five-acre lot adjacent to the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center, the Kenai Riverbend RV Park appraised at $3.5 million and a 4,400-square foot house in Soldotna appraised at nearly $620,000 among other land.
According to Jin, the city never sent them a notice, although he admitted something needed to be done with the trailer in question.
"It was falling apart, in ramshackles from renters a long time ago," Jin said. "I never got around to taking care of it. We do know that it needs to be taken care of."
According to city code, the city can "take action to abate the nuisance" and charge the owners for costs incurred.
