Anchor Point VFW helps residents properly retire U.S. flags in dignified way

This week has brought more great weather to help bring in summer. June 21 is the official first day of summer, but I think it arrived a little early. I hope you are all taking time out to enjoy what Mother Nature is bringing our way.

It was brought to my attention that someone had put a torn U.S. flag out by the dumpsters in Anchor Point. When a flag is tattered or no longer in a condition that warrants display, remember to dispose of it in a dignified manner. The old flag should be retired with honor and all the dignity and respect befitting our nation's flag. The U.S. flag is more than just some brightly colored cloth. It is a symbol of our nation. If you have a flag that needs to be retired, you can drop it off at the Anchor Point chamber office, VFW Post 10221 in Anchor Point or at Car Quest in Homer. The VFW holds a ceremony for all retired flags.

The highways are getting a little heavier with summer tourists, so be careful on the road. Our momma moose are parading about with their new calves, so please keep a close eye out for them. Don't take these animals for granted; they seem to think that the highways are theirs and you are trespassing.

For those of you who have a chance to get out on the water, I wish you much luck. Have a great weekend and be safe.
