Eagle Lady memorial funds sought
Donations are helping fund a creation of a memorial to Jean Keene, known as Homer's Eagle Lady. Keene died in January, after more than 30 winters feeding bald eagles near her home on the Homer Spit. The former rodeo trick rider turned eagle advocate also was the subject of "The Eagle Lady, Jean Keene," a book by Anchorage author and photographer Cary Anderson. With $15,000 needed to create the memorial, more than $5,500 has been contributed to date, according to Keene's son, Lonnie."The reality is that we need about $9,500 more to make sure that we have the funds available to establish a very special lasting memorial for my mom," said Lonnie Keene, assuring contributors that no matter how much is eventually given, it will all be used for the purpose intended. Assistance other than financial also is needed. Specifically, Lonnie Keene is asking for help spreading the word about the memorial. Donations are tax deductible. They can be made by check, with "Jean Keene Memorial Fund" noted on the memo line of the check, to Homer Council on the Arts, 355 West Pioneer Ave., Homer, AK 99603, or deposited directly to Account No. 2527103044 at Wells Fargo Homer Branch, 88 Sterling Highway, Homer, AK 99603.
