Crane Family Outing: Guest video

By Nina Faust

Crane colts (chicks) start foraging with their parents after a day or two in the nest. Parents find bugs and worms as they wander. For the first two weeks they will likely return to their nest for overnight brooding. The colts, born with a rather yellow color, get their red tinge from their parents who continue to "paint" their feathers with iron mud and water. The colts in this video are 6-7 days old. The video was filmed on Inspiration Ridge Preserve in Homer, Alaska.
