Summer events abound in Anchor Point community
Mary McAnelly
The summer season is a busy time for Anchor Point, beginning with the opening of king salmon season on the Anchor River. This year the Anchor Point Community Association and many members of the community organized activities to involve the youths and their families, both locals and visitors.

There were cookouts, pancake breakfasts, concerts on the lawn at Chapman School, and many outdoor games. All of this was accomplished with volunteer help and donations.

The results were well worth the effort and a new Memorial Day tradition for Anchor Point has been established.

The All-American Youth Fishing Derby will be held Saturday. Registration is free at the Anchor Angler, and the competition is open to all youths younger than 16. Fishing begins at 6 a.m. and ends at noon.

The casting competition begins at 1 p.m. at the Anchor Angler. Free hot dogs, chips, and beverage for the participants. This annual event is made possible by the Anchor Point Chamber of Commerce, the South Peninisula Sportsman's Associa-tion, and Stan Harrington of the Anchor Angler.

Anchor Point Chamber of Commerce is hosting a men's only open-air sale Saturday next to the Anchor Point Visitor Center and Chamber of Commerce office.

Table space is $10. To reserve a space call 235-2600.

The sale will be from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The Anchor Point library has begun the Youth Reading program. Stop by and sign up for a fun-filled summer of reading adventure. The library is located on Milo Fritz Road next to the VFW.

There have been numerous sightings of brown and black bear in the Anchor River Valley and all along the Anchor River.

The Bears enjoy the salmon too, just use common sense and be aware of their presence during the warm-weather months.

Happy Father's Day to all the area dads.

Have a relaxing day, go fishing, let the kids take you out to dinner or fix breakfast for you.
