High schoolers create their future

By McKibben Jackinsky

At closing ceremonies Friday afternoon, 68 students from seven schools in the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District -- Nanwalek, Nikolaevsk, Ninilchik, Port Graham, Razdolna, Tyonek and Voznesenka -- displayed the work in which they've been immersed during a two-week summer institute offered by Project GRAD.

At the closing ceremony of Project GRAD's summer institute, coach Mike Peterson displays a bridge made by students during the math section of two-week program.

Begun in Houston, Texas, Project GRAD works with K-12 students to promote continued education. High school graduates who complete specific requirements, including attendance at two summer institutes, are eligible for a $4,000 scholarship.

This year's institute was organized around the theme "Invent Your Future."

It included studies in mathematics, science and communications, as well as offering students the opportunity to job shadow in professions of their choosing.
