Spit Run draws fun-loving crowd

By Ben Stuart
Staff Writer

Runners at the 2005 Homer News Spit Run spread out in a long line Saturday as they make their way past Beluga lake on their way to the finish near Land's End Resort. The race attracted more than 200 racers.
More than 250 young — and young at heart — runners sped through town to the end of the road Saturday for the 2005 Homer News Spit Run.

For some, like 10-year-old David LaFehr of Anchorage, running down the Spit was a new experience.

"It was my first 10K," LaFehr said. "I thought the end was after the first straightaway, and then after the second straightaway. But it kept going, it never ends.

LaFehr finished first in his age group with a time of 43 minutes, 13 seconds.

LaFehr has competed in several 5K races in Anchorage and the Lower 48.

He ran with his dad, Ed, for most of Saturday's race and then pulled away at the end.

Runners check their watches at the starting line Saturday as the 10k Homer News Spit Run starts.
"He dropped me at the five-mile mark," Ed said.

Other runners, like Brent Knight — a 2002 Soldotna High School graduate and last year's runner up — proved experience counts.

Knight beat John Clark of Anchorage by less than a minute to win his first Homer News Spit Run with a time of 33:47.

"I can't tell you how many times I've run this race," said Knight, pleased with his time especially after suffering a footwear malfunction halfway into it.

"I had to stop and tie my shoe at mile three," Knight laughed. "It was nice of John to hold up a bit for me."

Clark said he didn't have the gas near the end to finish with Knight.

Bob Farrell cools off halfway to the finish line.
Clark's revelation didn't surprise Knight.

"Yeah, because you ran a marathon last week," he said.

"It was a real pleasant race," Knight said. "Wonderful people, just a great place to be."

The 10K race began at the Homer High School parking lot and finished near Land's End Resort on the Homer Spit.

The People's Choice Award went to John Chapple, who at age 83 finished the race in just over one hour, 38 minutes.

Chapple won shoes and a hat donated by second-place finisher Clark who is the owner of Skinny Raven in Anchorage.

The best costume award and gift certificates to The Fringe and Fat Olives went to Taylor Holman, Jordan Raymond and Kenra Raymond.

Each of the fastest runners in each age group won gift certificates from local businesses including Timeless Toys, Solstice Music, Homer Jeans, Captains Coffee, Kachemak Gear Shed, Don Joses', Café Cups and Fat Olives.

Brent Knight, left, and John Clark jump to the head of the pack Saturday.
The top three overall women finishers — Kristina Smith (40:39), Rachel Goldstein (43:24) and Laura Rooper (48:31) — received gift certificates from Homer Saw and Cycle and Skinny Raven.

The top three overall men finishers — Knight (33:47), Clark (34:25), and Nathan Allen (35:29) — won Homer Saw and Cycle and Fat Olives gift certificates.

The red lantern award was handed to Cathy Gall, Hugh Littrell, Dixie Hart and Juanita Littrell, for finishing the race last.

Prizes that were not picked up at the race can still be picked up at the Homer News.
