Off the blotter
by Michael Armstrong
Staff Writer

A person on June 23 reported finding a phosphorous flare on the Homer Spit. Police held the flare for soldiers from the U.S. Army Emergency Ordinance Disposal division. EOD determined the flare to be extremely dangerous and disposed of it in a gravel pit.

Police on June 23 received a report of a downed plane in the bay. A person made a 911 call saying he saw a red airplane with engine problems go down. Police helped troopers and the Coast Guard search for the missing plane. No plane was reported overdue or missing, and the search was cancelled.

An Anchorage man and woman were reported overdue on June 25 by a girlfriend of the missing woman. The woman said her friend and the woman's boyfriend went to Homer the weekend of June 21-22 to go kayaking, and had not returned by Wednesday, June 25. Police contacted the complainant later and she said the couple returned home safely and newly married.

Early in the morning of June 29, police received a report from the Salty Dawg that a woman's keys and car were stolen. An officer went to the Homer Spit bar and found the woman to be highly intoxicated. A friend of the woman took her keys, following the popular advice that "friends don't let friends drive drunk."

Two people picked up an injured man near the Homer Spit campground around 2:30 a.m. June 29 and brought him to the police station. The victim said five men beat him up on the Spit. Homer emergency medical technicians treated the 26-year-old man and transported him to the hospital. Police contacted some suspects, and they denied physically assaulting the victim. The fight was determined to have been mutual combat and no charges were filed.
