HOMER’S BEST BETS

Welcome to Homer. You probably saw those cruise ships disgorging passengers at the Pioneer Dock, right next to yachts owned by sexy dot-com millionaires. Not only are we one of the top 100 art towns in America, we’re also one of the 50 sexiest towns and, of course, one of the 10 coolest small towns. You can get to Homer by driving down Highway “AL1,” but watch out for the freedom frosting deposited by the hundreds of bald eagles.

Sheesh. From “The 100 Best Art Towns in America” to Men’s Journal to the Daily Show, there’s been a lot of hoo-yah uttered about Homer.

Is it possible for anyone passing through on a vacation to capture the true essence of Homer? Not even those of us who have lived here long enough to break in some XtraTufs have sussed out this place.

Not to get like all philosophical on ya or anything, but human consciousness being what it is, we’re all going to have different perceptions of reality. Some of us have way different perceptions of reality, but that’s what bad drugs in the 1960s will do to you.

So if you want to figure out The Real Homer, why not take a field trip with some of these Best Bets?

BEST FAREWELL TO DUST BET:

This summer contractors start on paving the last gravel road in the Homer area. Find out about the whole plan today when from 6-9 p.m. the road wizards hold a community meeting at Homer City Hall on the East Skyline Drive, Diamond Ridge and Ohlson Mountain road paving projects.

BEST AND PLENTY OF PARKING BET:

The best place to buy children’s clothing is right here on Pioneer Avenue — and at bargain prices. From 5:30-8 p.m. Friday the Salvation Army holds a storewide sale.

Best, not only do the profits stay in town, but the proceeds benefit local Salvation Army programs.

BEST WILL PUTT FOR FOOD BET:

Here’s the way to raise money: show ’em such a great time people will forget it’s for a good cause. Starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Homer Food Pantry holds a golf tournament at Kachemak Bay Lynx Golf Course out East End Road. Tickets are $25 for the day ($16 for season ticket holders), with a barbecue and silent auction.

BEST LEARN YOUR PLANTS BET:

Been wondering what that funny pink flower is? Stroll through the Pratt Museum’s Botanical Garden and check out the nicely labeled plants. There’s a guided tour at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, when one of the docents of dirt talks about our local flora.
