The sister cities program involves local government officials and volunteers who work toward a strong partnership with cities abroad. Homer has two sister cities: Teshio, Japan, since 1983 and Yelizovo, Russia, since 1995.
When people from Homer visit either of the sister cities they have the opportunity to tour local hospitals, schools and museums, as well as to stay in homes and build friendships with the people of those cities.
Rachel Livingston is in charge of the sister cities program.“When we visit our Teshio friends we are immersed in their way of life and when our Teshio friends visit us here it is the same,” she said.
Livingston said that between 30-100 people are involved with the program at one time.
The city of Homer is considering another sister city relationship with a city in Thailand.
