The Duck Race also was a success, due to the hard work of Chamber of Commerce Treasurer Glenna Wells. Wells is determined to boost sales up to the $2,000 goal she has set for herself for next year.
The raft race was enjoyed by participants of all ages and was organized by Chamber of Commerce Board Member Nancy Finney.
The coin hunt for all the children attending the community picnic was one of the high points of the day. This function has been the annual task of Al Garbe since the first community Fourth of July celebration, and also takes place at Snow Rondi. Al has done a great job over the years, and looks forward to spreading out the tarp and sawdust, burying all the loose coins and letting the kids go for it.
The community picnic is always a time of relaxing, visiting and sharing good food with family, old and new friends.
Chamber President Kathy Toms stepped in at the last minute to cook hot dogs, and oversee the chili and dessert cook-off, due to the illness of Chamber Recording Secretary Mary McAnelly.
The chili cook-off had two entrants, Shirley Morra with Texas Hot Chili and Jan Gladish with Plain Jane Chili. This year's judges, being real diplomats, called it a tie for both ladies. Ms. Morra did take first place in the dessert arena with her fabulously decadent chocolate cake.
Mary McAnelly is a freelance writer who covers Anchor Point for the Homer News. Items for this report can be e-mailed to her at maryt@ptialaska.net.
