Artist visits local gallery

Barbara Lavallee of Anchorage will be at Art Shop Gallery from 1-7 p.m. Saturday. The public is invited to stop by the gallery, meet the artist and view her prints, books and ornaments. This is part of Art Shop Gallery’s summer Alaska artist series.

Drama, debate, forensics clinic

Students interested in joining Homer High School’s Drama, Debate and Forensics Team are encouraged to participate in a DDF clinic, Aug. 5-6, at Homer High School. The workshop will include activities in acting, pantomime, interpretive presentation, extemporaneous speaking, reader’s theater and debate. Registration is limited to incoming ninth-grade students. Travel writing tips taught

Alaska author Bill Sherwonit will teach adventure travel writing at Across the Bay Tent and Breakfast Adventure Company near Seldovia July 21-23. Fee is $350. For more information, call 234-2571 or 235-3533.

Seldovia plans two July events

Seldovia Arts Council has scheduled the following:

  • Plein-air (open-air) painting workshop with artist Susan R. Ball, July 27-29. Ball will work individually with each participant. Workshop fee is $100; registration deadline is July 21; call 234-7614. Paintings from the workshop will be displayed during Patrick Ball’s performance July 29 (see below).
  • Celtic harpist and storyteller Patrick Ball will perform his solo musical theater piece “The Fine Beauty of the Island” at the Susan B. English School, 8 p.m. July 29. Tickets are $15 adults, $8 children. Season ticket passes can be used.
Call for artists<P> Anchorage Museum of History and Art has made the following announcements. For more information, call (907) 343-6122 or visit the museum’s Web site at www.anchoragemuseum.org, click on opportunities for artists.

  • Alaska artists are invited to apply for a solo exhibition at the museum for the 2007 through 2009 exhibition seasons. Deadline for entries is Aug. 18.
  • Alaska artists working in the media of clay, fiber, wood, bone, stone, glass and metal are invited to enter the 2007 Earth, Fire and Fibre exhibition, the biennial statewide craft exhibition organized by the Anchorage Museum. Submission deadline is Aug. 31. Juror for the exhibition will be Michael W. Monroe, executive director and chief curator of the Bellevue Arts Museum.
 

Grant awards announced

Alaska State Council on the Arts has awarded an artist-in-the-schools residency to Chapman School in Anchor Point.

An independent artist-in-schools grant was awarded to Bunnell Street Gallery. Homer grant recipients from ASCA also included:

  • Bunnell Street Gallery, $6,004,
  • Homer Council on the Arts, $10,878,
  • Pratt Museum, $17,042,
  • Pier One Theatre, $4,605.
