Pet of the Week

Duke
It's no fun being a dog during the dog days, the time between July and September when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs. The term "dog days" also refers to a period of stagnation and inactivity, and is when Sirius, the dog star, rises and sets with the sun. The dogs of Homer aren't used to this heat and they're hurtin' for certain, especially the homeless ones who don't have anybody to take them to the beach. That's what Duke dreams about ... the cool surf, romping in the waves, getting wet. He's a young male black lab mix with white on his feet and his chest. He knows the command "sit" and is very good at walking on a leash.

If you'd like to adopt a pet, call or stop by the Animal Shelter on the Bypass across from the post office. The shelter is open seven days a week, 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. Call 235-3141, or visit the shelter's Web site at www.homeranimalshelter.com.
