The Homer High School Mariner cross country team will participate next month in the annual 3-mile fun run with non-team members. The run will take place on the Homer High School running trail.
The first three finishers in each division will win ribbons in the high school, elementary school, junior high school and open categories.
The run takes place 11 a.m. Aug. 2, with registration beginning one hour earlier.
The event is a fund-raiser for the Homer High School cross country team; registration costs $5 per runner. For more information, call 235-2166.
Basketball camp for young ones
"Hoop It Up" basketball camp, for children in kindergarten through eighth grade, runs today through Saturday at the Homer High School gym.
Campers in K-2, called "Little Dribblers," play from 9-10 a.m., and registration costs $25.
Grades 3-5 run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and registration is $45.
Grades 6-8 runs from 3-5 p.m. and costs $45.
Every player will receive a custom "Hoop It Up" T-shirt. Players are asked to wear T-shirts, sneakers and shorts, and to bring water bottles with their names on them.

The Sport Physical Night will take place at the Homer Medical Clinic from 5:30-8:30 p.m. tonight at a cost of $15. Spaces are limited.
Tonight will be the first HHS Mariner Athletic Booster Club meeting, beginning at 7 p.m. in the commons.
Football cheerleading and cross country running begin practice Monday.

Homer High School is looking to fill the following coaching positions for the 2003-2004 athletic season. Individual season dates, stipends and application deadlines also are listed.
Football
Two JV Coaches are needed, July 28-Oct. 11; $2,698; July 25.
A C-Team coach also is needed, July 28-Oct. 11; $1,418; July 25.
Volleyball
A JV coach is being sought, Aug. 11-Nov. 15; $2,698; July 25.
A C-Team coach is needed, Aug. 11-Nov. 15; $1,418; July 25.
Hockey
A varsity coach is needed from Oct. 20-February 14, $3,698; open until filled.
Basketball
A C-Team girls coach is needed from Dec. 1-March 20; $1,418; open until filled.
A varsity boys coach is also needed, Dec. 1-March 20; $3,698; open until filled.

To qualify, applicants must have or be willing to obtain Alaska Coaching Certification, and must have coached or participated in the sport for which they apply.
Job requirements include:
select and coach individual participants in the skills necessary for achievement; plan and schedule a regular program of practice in season; work closely with the athletic director in scheduling interscholastic contests and booster club fundraising; maintain and recommend the purchase of equipment, supplies and uniforms; maintain the necessary physical forms, insurance eligibility forms and records as required by ASAA, KPSA and the local school.
Oversee the safety conditions of the facility or the area in which the assigned sport is conducted at all times students are present; establish performance criteria for participation in interscholastic competition in the sport; enforce discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times; establish and oversee penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.
Maintain personal/professional conduct and dress standards commensurate with the ideals of the KPBSD interscholastic activity program; perform other duties pertinent to the sport as assigned by the principal or athletic director.
