Artist Jon Van Zyle will be at Art Shop Gallery from 1-7 p.m. Saturday. Known as the “official” Iditarod artist, Van Zyle paints a wide range of Alaska subjects and has illustrated a variety of books. Most recently his illustrations have been paired with the writing of Debbie S. Miller in the children’s book “Big Alaska — Journey Across America’s Most Amazing State,” published by Walker & Company.

Celebration of thanksgiving

The Kenaitze Indian Tribe celebration of thanks to the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and others supporting the tribe’s revitalization efforts will take place at K’Beq’, mile 52.6 of the Sterling Highway, directly across from the Russian River campground entrance from noon-7 p.m. Friday. There is no charge. The public is invited.

Garage sale for the arts

Calien Galleries is sponsoring a “Starving Artist/Garage Sale” in the gallery parking lot at 200 E. Pioneer Ave., 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call Carla Lien, 226-3937.

Quilts for the fair

Deadline to submit quilts for display at the Kenai Peninsula State Fair in Ninilchik Aug. 18-20 is 1 p.m. Aug. 14. The quilts can be taken to the fair office prior to deadline. To arrange a drop-off time, call (907) 567-3670.

Registration of entries must include a completed entry form and exhibit tag, both of which are available at the Ninilchik fair office, the Alaska Cooperative Extension Service in Soldotna and also are available through local quilt shops. Additional pick-up of quilts on the southern Kenai Peninsula is scheduled as follows:

Homer: Seams To Bee, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 12.

Ninilchik: Ninilchik fairgrounds, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 14.

Deadline for artist awards

Rasmuson Foundation has set Sept. 1 as the postmark deadline to apply for the fall round of individual artist awards.

The purpose of the awards is to provide financial support for artists living and creating in Alaska. Guidelines and application information can be found on the Web at www.rasmuson.org or by calling toll-free in Alaska (877) 366-2700. Artists may apply in one of three categories:

Project Award: Artists working in an artistic discipline at any stage of their career, up to $5,000.

Fellowship: Mid-career and mature artists working in media arts, multidiscipline — new genre, music composition or visual arts, $12,000.

Distinguished artist: Artists of recognized stature with a history of creative excellence and accomplishment in the arts, $25,000. Distinguished artists also may be nominated by others.

Call for artists

The Anchorage Museum of History and Art is inviting artists to submit works for the 2007 Earth, Fire and Fibre exhibition, a biennial statewide craft exhibition. Submission deadline is Aug. 31.

The museum also is inviting artists to apply for a solo exhibition for the 2007-2009 exhibition seasons. Deadline for entries is Aug. 18. For more information, call (907) 343-6122 or visit the Web at www.anchoragemuseum.org, “Opportunities for Artists.”

Council seeking artists for schools

Alaska State Council on the Arts’ Artist in Schools program is looking for professional teaching artists in visual, literary, traditional Native and performing art forms with a desire to share skills with Alaska students and teachers.
