Homer's Best Bets

Here it comes. August. Time for the fair, back to school shopping and mad camping trips. But before all of that happens Homer has a few things planned, almost like a last — and long — hurrah to summer.

A 2-year-old musician plays along with Three-Legged Mule at the 2005 Concert on the Lawn last year. This year's concert is noon-10 p.m. Saturday and noon-9 p.m. Sunday.
ARTrageous August is what they’re calling it. July rolls on out with a slew of music and dancers at the annual KBBI Concert on the Lawn and August rolls in with — everything else. Theater, first Friday, orchestra, workshops, even a ball.

Forget the glass slippers and the white satin gown, unless you want it to get a little colorful. The theme of the ball is “wear white — get painted.”

On the subject of white satin, what’s with all the weddings?

Best bet to watch a wild ride: The fourth city race for the Homer Racing Lions is 11 a.m., Saturday. Come out and cheer for Homer’s wild bunch. Gate fee, $5. Seniors and children under 11 years old get in free.

Best bet for a relaxing lunch: Would you like soup, salad or music with that? How about a combination. Free luncheon concerts by the Kenai Peninsula Orchestra as part of the annual summer music festival July 31-Aug. 13. All concerts are at noon. July 31, Fresh Sourdough Express Bakery; Aug. 1, Latitude 59; Aug. 2, Duncan House.

Best learn to cook bet: If you like smoked salmon, but have not perfected your technique getting it just right, head out to the Heritage RV Park today for a lesson from Ralph Crane on how to smoke salmon. Call 235-7911 to preregister, $15, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Best see some talent bet: Yes, talent in Homer is everywhere, but youth theater will have you saying “wow.” This weekend check out the youth directed “Little Nell” and “The Devil and Daniel Webster.” Thursday-Saturday, 7 p.m., with an extra 3 p.m. show on Saturday.

Best bet to support the PTA: It’s fun, it’s easy and it’s only $2. Check out the summer children’s film festival. A different classic children’s film shows Tuesday, 1 p.m. at the Homer Theatre. This week’s flick is The Wizard of Oz. All proceeds benefit the local PTA.

Best bet to feed an artist: Bring your wallet, if there’s a little cash in it, and check out the Starving Artist garage sale at Calien Galleries on Pioneer Avenue Saturday and Sunday. Sale starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 6:30 p.m.
