“People were very generous with their bids,” Bowen said.
The afternoon's highest bid was $150 for “The Old Man” bag, created by Kari Multz-Howell from her collection of men's ties.
“Sometimes a hint of after shave will waft up from my pressing,” Multz-Howell wrote of the materials used to make the versatile bag which can be worn as a shoulder or hand bag or as a fanny pack. “Ah, the male mystique on a leash.”
Many of those in attendance took advantage of the tea-setting to haul out seldom-used dress-up clothes. Adorned in dramatic black jacket and sweeping skirt and hidden behind a pair of sparkling rhinestone glasses, Flo Larson took the best-dressed award.
Music provided by Damon McLay was a perfect backdrop for hostess Kathleen Balsemo's descriptions of the handbags that were modeled by Jocelyn Shiro-Westphal, Christa Collier, Kim Perkins and Ron Martin.
Vases of flowers, tea and an impressive assortment of desserts were prepared by HCOA's board of directors.
“We have all kinds of ideas for next year,” Bowen said. “This will absolutely happen again.”
Well, no one, actually. The Old Bags Tea, held at Kachemak Bay Campus on Sunday was a fund-raising event for Homer Council on the Arts and the brainchild of Lynn Spence, according to HCOA Executive Director Janet Bowen. Eighteen handbags, given new life complete with their very own stories by the creative genius of 17 local artists, were auctioned at the tea and raised $1,600 for HCOA.
