Homer's best bets
Hey, all you visitors who dropped into Homer this week: You've probably heard about the incredibly fantastic weather you just missed. Ah, those glorious weeks of sunshine have become the stuff of legend. You should have been here then: basking on gray sandy beaches, swimming in the bay, walking around in shorts and T-shirts in a fruitless attempt to cool off after days of scorching 65-degree temperatures.

Actually, it's been rainy all summer. We lay out that old "you should have been here last week" routine on anyone visiting during our usual days of rain and roses. The possibility of actual sunshine day after day after day is so alien that for sanity's sake we wipe out the memory. Didn't happen. Sunshine? Never heard of it. It's always rain, rain, rain. Don't pay any attention to those weather records.

Well, what did ya expect? That sunshine could actually continue into August? What do you think this is Palm Springs? It's situation normal weatherwise, nature's sweet little way of telling us to get ready for w-.

Only, hey, you never know. You know what they say about weather in Homer. If you don't like it, just wait 36 hours and it will change. And change again. Just like these Best Bets:

BEST 'IS THAT A REAL PONCHO OR A SEARS PONCHO?' BET: KBBI's Concert on the Lawn just wouldn't be the same without rain gear. Bring your rain poncho, and if by chance the radio gods should smile upon our local public station, you could always sit on your poncho instead of wearing it. The concert starts at noon Saturday at Karen Hornaday Park and continues Sunday. Come hear Homer's finest musical acts. Tickets are $15 for members, $18 for nonmembers.

BEST WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE, FAITH, LOVE BET: Back in the day, Brother Asaiah and other followers of Krishna Venta commonly known as the Barefooters lived out at the head of Kachemak Bay. Dale Chorman leads a mountain bike trip out to the Krishna Venta Conservation Area from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 a person, a fund-raiser for Kachemak Heritage Land Trust. There's another KHLT tour from 1-4 p.m. Sunday when Daisy Lee Bitter holds a tour of her garden at her Skyline Drive home. Tickets are $10 a person, $20 a family.

BEST OH CAPPELA! BET: Some people say the purest musical instrument is the one we're all born with: the human voice. Take a break at noon Monday and listen to some of Homer's finest voices when the Mud Bay Madrigal Society performs at Fresh Sourdough Express Bakery on Ocean Drive.

BEST TODAY THE HOMER SPIT, TOMORROW BROADWAY BET: Carmen Pfeil, one of the actresses in this season's "Proof" at Pier One Theatre, got her start in the Pier One Youth Theatre. Want to see the next, next generation of theater geniuses? See its production at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday of Eugene Ionesco's "Rhinoceros," directed by Nikki Beck and Jake Schmutzler.
