Homer-area politicos talk about transition

On Sunday in Fairbanks, former Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell was sworn in as Alaska's 10th governor, taking over from former Governor Sarah Palin, who shocked Alaskans July 3 with her sudden resignation announcement. Here's what Homer-area politicos had to say about the transition:

"I'm looking forward to working with the new governor. He called me immediately, shortly after it was announced that he would be moving into the position. Sean Parnell is really experienced. He served in the Legislature for several years, in both the House and the Senate, and was once the co-chair of the House Finance Committee. He certainly understands the budget and overall legislative process and I look forward to having a close working relationship with him. I think he'll do outstanding job."

Sen. Gary Stevens, R-Kodiak

"I think that with Sean's experience in the Legislature, there will be more direct communication between legislators and the governor. The biggest challenge with Gov. Palin's office was that no one really had the authority to finalize negotiations with the Legislature. Everything had to be done, but there was a lot of frustration because we could never quite get the finalization on a process or know what the game plan was. I anticipate that will change with Gov. Parnell. Since he has been through the legislative process and been involved in it, he knows how to come to a conclusion on a compromise."

Rep. Paul Seaton, R-Homer

"I wish them both well. I have no idea what is in store for Sarah, but I think she is a unique person and I would not underestimate her. I wish Gov. Parnell well and look forward to working with him. I would advise him to keep in continuous contact with the Legislature and also keep in contact with the people of Alaska so we know what's going on."

Homer Mayor James Hornaday

"We've been friends with Sean Parnell for a long, long time. He's been active in the Republican Party for a long time. He is a very astute man and he's very articulate and intelligent. He's kind of quiet, but he knows what his job is. He just has a way of getting things done and I think we're going to see him step forward in a very strong manner. I think the experience that he's had is very good and I expect him to step into a leadership role very quickly."

Eileen Becker, chair of District 35 Republican Party
