Anchor Point Chamber of Commerce
The chamber encourages everyone to participate in next year’s July Fourth chili and dessert competitions. This is a recap of some of the winners from this year. In the chili competition, first place went to Jim Meinen. Said the judges: Not too spicy, just right. Second place went to Jan Gladish. Said the judges: Labeled the “other” chili because of its white color. Great flavor.
In the dessert competition, the first place winner was Mik Snegirev for a peaches and cream pie. Judges’ comments: We want the recipe. Second place winner was Beth Houglum for her chocolate éclairs. Judges’ comments: Fantastic. Third place went to Glennie Wells for her wonderful blueberry pudding cake. Judges’ comments: Full of sweet blueberries, very moist; tastes great.
All winners were awarded ribbons and the first-place chili also received a very nice cast iron, porcelain-coated Dutch oven. The first place dessert winner also received a heavy glass cake stand/hors d’oeuvre serving tray.
The chamber is now busy making welcome packets for the visitors coming to the Motocross State Finals on Aug. 12 and 13. Business members are encouraged to get any advertising tokens such as pens and coupons to the chamber as soon as possible. Approximately 500 visitors are expected for this event

VFW Post 10221
The Cooties are coming. The post will be infested with Cootie bugs this weekend. Members and guests are invited to come on down and say “Hey” to all the bugs. The weekend will start with Karaoke with Tom at 9 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, there will be hamburgers and hot dogs hosted by our visiting Cooties. Live music by Love Tap is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. Saturday.
You may be asking: “What is a Cootie?” The name “Cootie” originated in World War I when the different armies were massed together on the battlefields of France. Each country represented in WWI contributed to what is now known as the Cooties, an amalgamation of lice. These lice were known to bite the soldiers at just the right time to save the soldiers’ lives.
The story is that often when a shell left the German trenches the “cootie” would bite the soldiers, causing them to stoop and scratch at just the exact time that the shell would pass over the place where the soldier’s head had been.
Today, the Military Order of the Cooties works for its parent organization, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and continues to do good for all whom they come in contact with. Cooties are always ready to help their comrades and their comrades’ widows and orphans. They contribute generously to the maintenance of the orphanage at Eaton Rapids, Mich. The spirit of comradeship and good will that exist in the Cooties is beyond comparison in other organizations. In the Cooties, fun is king and willingness to help in any cause for the betterment of humanity is the goal. That is why the Cootie slogans are “Busier than a Bee” and “Closer than a Brother.”
