Every war in the history of humans that has caused the death of untold millions can be named for the sake of politics or religion. It is often said that never has a war occurred that didn’t involve both politics and religion. Therefore with sophist logic can we say politics are synonymous with religion?
Today’s story is about the killing of five innocent children for reasons other than politics or religion. Five years ago Andrea Yates was sentenced to life in prison for her crime. It took five years for the court to overturn her conviction. Her story was well known and discussed in detail by everyone who was a parent and those who only had parents. The public abhorred the very thought of it and rode the waves of emotional detest and sympathy while Andrea sat in calm wait. Time is a balm that allows for reflection and now the public universally agrees that Andrea had no sinister motive, only the disease of insanity.
When given the true facts and time to reflect, the majority opinion of the general public, if unencumbered by emotional stress, has proved most often to have the right answer. Today the world is in turmoil and the American public has some hard choices to make. People’s emotions have been churned to a high degree which makes decisions difficult, but the outcome of the Andrea Yates case gives us hope that we will solve our problems.
