Homer Wilderness Leaders

HoWL provides outdoor experiential education and wilderness leadership courses to youth in Alaska.

Day trips are held noon-4 p.m. on Sundays from the HoWL headquarters in the Yurt Village. They are open to youth age 8 and up, and more experienced HoWLers are encouraged to be involved as junior leaders. Cost is sliding scale $10-30.

A rock climbing and yoga combination trip will be Aug. 8. The day-long adventure begins with a morning water taxi across the bay to Kachemak Crack, where HoWL instructors will teach beginner and intermediate rock climbing. After a gourmet lunch, Stephanie Dickerson of Anahata Yoga Studio will lead participants in yoga on the beach. A water taxi will bring participants back by dinner-time. Cost is $155 and includes transportation, instruction, lunch and some gear for those who don't have their own. This trip is designed for ages 16 and up.

The last HoWL trip of the season is the Alpine Lakes Expedition, Aug. 15-19, Ages 13-18, with a $550 fee. For more information and registration, call 399-HOWL or visit www.howlalaska.org.
