Homer Volunteer Fire Department firefighters went to two separate vehicle fires over the weekend. On Friday, firefighters at 8:30 p.m. went to a report of a vehicle on fire at the Northern Enterprises Boat Yard on Kachemak Drive. Upon arrival firefighters found an older model Chevrolet El Camino completely engulfed in flames in a parking area at the boat yard. Firefighters put out the fire. A nearby trailer and a pickup were slightly scorched, said Homer Fire Chief Bob Painter. The cause was determined to be electrical in origin, he said.

On Saturday at 5:21 p.m., firefighters went to another vehicle fire on China Poot Street. Upon arrival firefighters found the fire already put out. They confirmed that the fire was extinguished. The cause remains under investigation.

Alaska State Troopers at about 3 a.m. Aug. 3 went to a report of a vehicle pursuit on the North Fork Road. An Anchor Point woman reported she and the driver, an Anchor Point man, were being followed by a driver in a vehicle that had collided with them. She said the driver was trying to force them off the road. Troopers intercepted the vehicles and stopped both drivers. According to trooper reports, troopers allege Darren Shay, 48, of Ninilchik, passed the Anchor Point couple, then slammed on his brakes. The Anchor Point man couldn't avoid the collision and rear ended Shay's car. All parties wore seat belts, and Shay was injured and taken to South Peninsula Hospital. Troopers arrested Shay for driving under the influence and four counts of third-degree assault. Damage to both vehicles was about $5,000.

Homer emergency medical technicians were paged at 8:23 p.m. Aug. 1 to a report of a 16-year-girl injured in a four-wheeler accident. EMTs contacted the girl at her home near East End Road and Thompson Street. The girl was riding an ATV off the road when she hit a tree, said Fire Chief Bob Painter. She did not wear a helmet. EMTs treated and transported her to South Peninsula Hospital.

Alaska State Troopers at about 1:10 a.m. Aug. 1 received three 911 calls from a woman reporting her boyfriend assaulted her at a cabin of a Ninilchik lodge. Troopers Bryan Barlow and Ryan Browning went to the lodge and contacted the woman. According to court documents, troopers said the woman's right cheek and eye were swollen and red, and that she had scrapes on her face and blood in her hair. She also complained of pain in her neck.

The woman told troopers she was drinking at a bar with her boyfriend and when they went back to their cabin her boyfriend "freaked out" and hit her in the face with a cell phone. She said he put his hands around her throat and a pillow over her face. The woman said she almost blacked out.

Troopers contacted the suspect and found him holding his girlfriend's cell phone. Troopers allege he smelled of alcohol and his speech was slurred. They said he told them nothing happened between the two of them, and she may have fallen down. A man in an adjacent cabin told troopers he heard a man and woman fighting. Troopers allege they saw blood and eye makeup on one pillow. EMTs took the woman to the hospital for treatment.

Troopers arrested the suspect, Case T. Vannostrand, 34, Anchorage, for third-degree assault and second-degree assault, domestic violence, both felonies. Vannostrand was taken to the Homer Jail.

Homer Police at 3:45 a.m. July 30 received a report that a man in all dark clothing was tearing down signs on Pioneer Avenue near Svedlund Street. The caller said the suspect threw objects at the Pioneer Car Wash sign and then would hide in the car wash bays when vehicles approached. Officer Will Hutt went to the scene and saw a man matching the description. The man fled but was caught after a short pursuit. In court documents, police allege Joseph A. Inglis, 22, admitted throwing rocks at the sign, which cracked the plastic. Inglis submitted to a preliminary breath test. Police allege he had a .171 breath-alcohol level. He was arrested for fourth-degree criminal mischief.

Alaska State Troopers at about 8:20 p.m. July 30 received a 911 call from a woman reporting an assault. Trooper Ryan Browning contacted the woman at a neighbor's home. According to court documents, troopers allege the woman said she got into an argument with her husband, Eric Olsen, 50, about going to their oyster farm on Jackalof Bay because she didn't want to go. She said he picked her up and then threw her over his shoulder. She freed herself and ran in her bare feet to her neighbor's home. Troopers allege Olsen said he picked her up by the wrists and was not going to hurt her. Troopers arrested Olsen for fourth-degree assault, domestic violence.
