Classes starting soon at Kachemak Bay Campus
by Carey James
Staff Writer

Want to learn your carburetors from your catalytic converters? Maybe delve into postmodernism and the contemporary visual culture? Or perhaps hone your interpersonal job skills?

These and more than 100 courses and workshops are offered through the Kachemak Bay Campus of the Kenai Peninsula College in Homer this term, and registration for degree-seeking students is currently under way.

With most classes starting on Sept. 3, the college mailed out its fall course schedule last week, and will be accepting registration from the general public starting Aug. 18.

Classes start later than usual this year to allow those who work summer jobs through Labor Day to start at the same time as the rest of the class, according to Carol Swartz, director of the college.

Classes will go a week later in December, cutting Christmas break shorter, to accommodate the schedule.

In addition to the wide variety of new and returning classes, the college offers several four- and two-year degrees through the local campus including liberal studies, psychology, human services, education, nursing, business administration, biology, history, accounting, computer information and office systems and art. Advisers can help students adjust their schedules and appointments can be made by calling 235-7743.

New to this year's schedule are a variety of classes ranging from introduction to oceanography to a workshop on not-for-profit finance. The college aims to offer classes that will appeal not only to the traditional student, but to those seeking to broaden their horizons with specialized classes such as a course on herbal and nutritional studies, landscape painting and storytelling.

Perhaps one of the biggest developments at the college this year is the announcement that starting in January 2006, the campus will be offering the university's two-year degree in nursing.

"Now is the time for students wanting to apply for the program in 2005 to start taking all the non-nursing courses required for competitive admission," Swartz said.

The college will offer four live interactive courses between the two Kenai Peninsula College campuses this term, a distance delivery technology that was tested last term at the college.

Class costs range from around $270 per class plus fees for a lower-division class for Alaska residents to $300 for upper-division three-credit classes. Noncredit workshop classes are priced individually.

More information can be obtained by visiting the college Web site at www.homer.alaska.edu or calling 235-7743.
