A fan motor that cools the KBBI AM 890 transmitter broke last Friday afternoon while engineers had been doing tests for signal interference, knocking Homer's public radio station off the air over the weekend. While the transmitter is expected to be down until Tuesday afternoon, KBBI remains broadcasting through a digital audio stream at its Web site at www.kbbi.org. KBBI will broadcast Monday night's Homer City Council meeting through the Web. The problem developed when engineers turned off the transmitter while checking for interference. KBBI had been troubleshooting reports of interference with its AM signal on East Hill Road, Skyline Drive and Diamond Ridge Road. When the transmitter was turned back on, "The fan motor went clunk," said KBBI General Manager Dave Anderson. A new fan motor has been ordered, and should arrive Tuesday morning. An engineer from Alaska Public Broadcasting Inc., the engineering group that provides technical support to stations affiliated with the Alaska Public Broadcast Commission, will fly down with the new part on the 1:30 p.m. plane. KBBI hopes to be back broadcasting by 3 or 4 p.m. Tuesday, Anderson said. For more information, visit KBBI at its Web site, or get updates through www.twitter.com and follow KBBINews.
