Cajun music, taste adds spice to Crawdad Fest

By Chris Eshleman
Staff Writer

Ray-Jen Cajun, Homer’s six-piece Cajun and zydeco band that brings the rhythms of the bayou to the currents of the bay, will play for the second straight year at the Crawdad Fest, to be held at the Alibi on Saturday.

“It should be a great event — it was really fun last year,” band member Jennifer King said of the fest, a fund-raiser for Kachemak Bay Family Planning Clinic.

King said the band was probably asked back again because its southern sound complements the event’s Cajun spread.

“It’s hot and zesty — just like the food,” she said.

In addition to the spicy crawdads, the menu includes corn, potatoes, bread and pecan bars.

The event also will include a live auction. Items to be auctioned off include handmade knives made by Dancing Man, boat charters, a full dinner package with meals at a number of restaurants and spa bags from the Bath Shop.

The band has been playing together for about 10 years, King said. It includes King playing bass and Ray Garrity on the button accordian and fiddle, with the two making up the Ray-Jen in the band’s name, Ray-Jen Cajun. Other musicians include Scotty Meyer, Mike Patch, Jeff Szarzi and Kate Meyer.

The six have each played a variety of musical styles over the years, King said.

Zydeco is an accordion-based genre born in southcentral and southwest Louisiana, according to the online Encyclopedia of Cajun Culture.

The event starts Saturday at 4 p.m. Tickets are $35 and are available at the clinic, the Alibi, Fritz Creek General Store and the Homer Bookstore.
