Energy Star products can lower your costs

Choosing Energy Star labeled products for your home can save up to 30 percent in energy costs, according to Alaska Housing Finance Corp.’s Research Information Center.

For example, if you replace a 10-year-old or older refrigerator with a new Energy Star labeled refrigerator, you can expect about a 50 percent energy savings on the new fridge.

Got an old clothes washer? By choosing an Energy Star labeled washer, you can save up to 70 percent in energy per load, and you’ll use 50 percent less water, too.

Did you know that 20 percent of your heat is lost through leaky ductwork? Seal it up (but not with regular duct tape which can fail in a few years).

With winter darkness, increase lighting efficiency 75 percent by switching to Energy Star labeled light bulbs.

Look for the Energy Star label on all kinds of products. The Energy Star label means a manufacturer has met voluntary standards for energy efficiency set by the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that will save you money.
