A man at 10:47 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, told Homer Police a man driving a gray Nissan pickup truck ran into a building on Bonanza Avenue. Officer Paul Meyer contacted the driver, William Lorenze, 53, at the scene. Police allege Lorenze showed signs of intoxication, failed field sobriety tests and had a breath-alcohol level of .253, three times the legal limit for driving under the influence. Police arrested Lorenze for DUI and driving while license revoked.

Alaska State Troopers at 1:56 a.m. Sunday on patrol on the North Fork Road saw a vehicle driving 55 mph in a 45 mph heading in the opposite direction. Trooper Curtis Vik, a Soldotna trooper providing backup while Homer troopers worked a murder investigation, turned around and followed the vehicle. In court documents, Vik alleged that the driver went 65 mph in a 45 mph zone and did not stop after he turned on his overhead lights and siren. He followed the car for about a mile before the driver stopped. Vik contacted the driver, Cindy Lee Maxim, 42. He said she told him she thought he was her ex-boyfriend following her, and when she saw the emergency lights she realized she had messed up. Vik said Maxim told him she drank two beers and a rum and Coke at a friend's house. He alleged she showed signs of intoxication, failed field sobriety tests and had a breath-alcohol level of .114. He also alleged she resisted when he put her in handcuffs. Troopers charged Maxim with failure to stop at the direction of a peace officer, a felony, DUI, reckless driving and resisting arrest. She was taken to the Homer Jail.

Troopers at 9:42 p.m. Saturday went to a report of domestic violence in Homer. A woman reported that after coming home from work at 9:30 p.m. Aug. 7 she found her husband driving over her bed in the driveway with his pickup truck. She said her husband then threw rocks at her while she was in her pickup. Trooper Bryan Barlow and Homer Police Officer Andy Deveaux responded and found the woman in the truck. They contacted the husband, Daniel Mahoney, 45, and allege that when they tried to put Mahoney in handcuffs, he resisted.

According to a criminal complaint, Mahoney's daughter, Shellie Mahoney, was alleged to also have tried to prevent officers from handcuffing her father. Barlow alleged Mahoney commanded her dog to attack them. Barlow tried to use nonviolent techniques to calm down Daniel Mahoney, but these were not effective. He sprayed Mahoney with pepper spray and was able to handcuff him and get him in a patrol car. Barlow alleged that Mahoney kissed her father on the face and was contaminated by pepper spray. Troopers allege the father and daughter appeared to be intoxicated. The wife also alleged she had been assaulted on Aug. 4 and received bruises and abrasions. Barlow said he saw bruises and abrasions on the woman's left knee. Troopers charged Mahoney with two counts of fourth-degree assault, domestic violence, and resisting arrest. They are investigating charges against Shellie Mahoney.

Homer Police arrested two visitors for DUI after they drove into the ditch in separate incidents. On Aug. 7, Officer Corey Rupe located a red pickup on Rochelle Road after receiving a report at 9:05 p.m. of an erratic driver who slid into the ditch on Early Spring street. Rupe contacted the driver, Daniel Person, 59, of Anchorage, and alleged he showed signs of intoxication, failed field sobriety tests and had a preliminary blood alcohol level of .157. Person was charged with felony DUI. He was also charged with refusal to take a breath test after he refused to provide a breath sample at the Homer Jail.

In another incident, Officer Nathan Hull contacted the driver of a white Honda Accord parked in front of a business on Ocean Drive with a flat tire and grass hanging from the front bumper. Police allege William Watson, 20, of Denver, failed field sobriety tests and had a breath-alcohol level of .191. He was arrested for DUI.
