Head Coach Daryl Farrens said the 1.5-mile community fun run was a fund-raiser for the program and each runner was charged a $5 entry fee.
"I think we got enough for one bus," Farrens said.
Homer High Sophomore Erika Gavenus won the female race with a time of 10:49. Former Mariner Andrew Peters beat the male pack with a time of 7:48.
Farrens said the fastest Mariner at the race was Ben Hawkins who finished third at 9:04.
With the loss of Monte Garroutte and Aleta Phelps, the Mariners' best two runners last year, to graduation, Farrens said Homer is looking to retool.
"Both the boys and girls have a lot of runners that are close together," Farrens said. "I think that will make us stronger."
Farrens said he is pleased with the freshman class and has recruited some upperclassmen that didn't run cross-country last year.
Most of the kids came to practice in good shape this year, Farrens said.
"Some folks have been working pretty hard during the summer," he said. "Last year they came in and got pretty sore."
Farrens said the team consists of about 20 runners right now.
He expects more should join the team as the start of school nears.
"There's probably between seven to 10 that are fishing or still on vacation that I'm expecting back," he said.
The Mariners' next race is a 5K event, Friday at Nikiski High School, beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday the team travels to Anchorage for the Bartlett Relays.
The Mariners' first home meet will be held Aug. 19 against Skyview and Kodiak.
