Cristy Fry, left, repairs nets on the F/V Realist last Friday afternoon. Fry and commercial fishermen on the F/V Maria B, the F/V Talisman and the F/V Riprunner donated pink salmon to the Homer Community Food Pantry earlier this week. Prices for pinks are about 10 cents a pound and hardly worth selling, Fry said. Pinks are caught in nets when fishermen target the more lucrative silver salmon. When she caught 150 pounds of pinks last week, Fry decided to donate the fish.

"I thought, boy, that much fish would be of more use out in the community than the pair of gloves I could buy with that $15," Fry said. Friday, Fry hoped to give away more pink salmon at the dock after setting aside about 200 pounds for the food bank, but had no extra. Next week, Fry and some other fishermen hope to catch more pinks in another salmon opening, she said. Bart Chow has agreed to store and ice the fish at Ed's Processing until fish can be delivered on Mondays through the Homer Community Food Pantry. Extra fish not needed by the food pantry will be given away at C Float at the Homer Harbor. Call Fry at 399-4333 for availability. Photo by Michael Armstrong, Homer News
