Thank you for not smoking
On behalf of over 900 supporters of the Homer Alliance for Fresh Air, I would like to commend the Homer City Council for their forward thinking approach in developing ordinance 03-36, "Smoking prohibited in city structures, vehicles and watercraft." Smoking is the number one cause of preventable death in the United States, causing over 400,000 premature deaths each year.

But secondhand smoke is the number three cause of preventable death, behind smoking and alcohol. Over 53,000 nonsmokers die each year from exposure to tobacco smoke. Implementation of this ordinance is a positive step toward protecting city employees and those conducting business in city facilities.

Hopefully, this is the first step toward protecting all workers and customers in Homer from the hazards of secondhand smoke.

Thank you for placing a high priority on the health and well being of the citizens of Homer.

Daniel Boone, Homer Alliance for Fresh Air
