But secondhand smoke is the number three cause of preventable death, behind smoking and alcohol. Over 53,000 nonsmokers die each year from exposure to tobacco smoke. Implementation of this ordinance is a positive step toward protecting city employees and those conducting business in city facilities.
Hopefully, this is the first step toward protecting all workers and customers in Homer from the hazards of secondhand smoke.
