According to the foundation's Web site, a 9-year-old boy named Craig Shergold in 1989 wanted to be recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records for receiving the most greeting cards. His wish was fulfilled in 1990 after receiving more than 16 million cards by another wish-granting organization not associated with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
"Craig is now a healthy college student," the Web site notes, "and he has requested an end to the mail. Mail that is received is forwarded to a recycling center."
A 38-year-old man at 4:30 a.m. Aug. 9 came to the Homer Police Station and asked officers to check on his wife. He told police he and his wife argued and he might have unintentionally hurt her when he kicked the door as he left. Police arrested the man for domestic-violence assault.
The Kenai District Attorney's office charged Levin J. Boone, 18, with theft by receiving and third-degree theft, both misdemeanors.
The DA alleges that in early June, Boone was involved with the theft of 15 cartons of cigarettes from Safeway. A store employee saw five young men grab the cigarettes and leave. In their haste, they left behind two bicycles, which Homer Police confiscated.
Police investigated and allege that Boone and four other men were involved. One suspect said he took the cigarettes but Boone encouraged him to steal them.
The suspects said they divided the cigarettes among them.
A police officer contacted Boone and saw what appeared to be several packs of cigarettes in Boone's pants pockets. Police allege Boone had three packs of Marlboro Lights and that he said he bought them at Petro Express. Petro Express employees said no one matching Boone's description bought cigarettes there.
Several motorists on Aug. 8 made "report every drunk driver immediately" complaints that a driver in a dark green 1998 Honda Civic drove erratically and was speeding on the Sterling Highway headed into Homer. Police stopped a 41-year-old Anchorage man, Keith Mahosky, near Mile 172 Sterling Highway.
They allege Mahosky had a strong odor of alcohol about him and failed field-sobriety tests.
Mahosky provided a breath sample which police allege tested at a blood-alcohol level of .205, more than twice the legal limit. They arrested him for driving under the influence.
