The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has raised the bag and possession limit to six fish for salmon other than king salmon on the Russian River and in the Russian River Sanctuary Area. No more than one salmon in a bag or possession limit may be a silver salmon. The weir count is already over 100,000 sockeye, with more than half the run yet to return.
Dolly Varden fishing in the Anchor River has been good near the Blackwater Bend area and further upstream. These brightly colored fish follow spawning king salmon upstream and can be found two to eight feet behind them. Small beads and epoxy egg patterns are showing great results, although many of the fish are still in the six- to 10-inch range. Deep holes with spawning salmon often hold many of these little fish, but don't forget the faster waters. Holding the drift at the end longer than normal and bouncing the fly or bead on the surface often attracts a feisty Dolly. Make sure to clip the barbs off your hooks if you plan to release these fish as the little Dollies are aggressive and often found in numbers.
Good clamming tides are on tap through Aug. 15, with another set for Aug. 26-30. Daily razor clam limits are the first 60 clams dug. No permit is needed. A free permit is required for littleneck and butter clams, and the harvest must be recorded before leaving the beach.
Silvers are thick in the Fishing Hole, biting on eggs and spinners, especially during the flooding and ebbing tides. The daily bag and possession limit for silver salmon is six in the vicinity of the Fishing Hole. No snagging is allowed.
